Brain surgery

Microscopic Brain Tumour SurgeryMicroscopic brain tumour surgery uses an operating microscope to remove a brain tumour as safely as possible while protecting the healthy brain around it. Not every brain tumour needs an operation, and the plan depends on the type, size and position of the tumour.Learn more VP Shunt SurgeryA VP shunt is a thin tube placed under the skin to drain extra fluid from the brain into the tummy, where it is absorbed by the body. It is a common treatment for hydrocephalus (water collecting in the brain) in children and adults.Learn more Skull Base SurgerySkull base surgery treats tumours and other growths on the floor of the skull, where the brain sits close to important nerves and blood vessels. It can be done through the nose with an endoscope, through an opening in the skull with a microscope, or a combination of both.Learn more Pituitary SurgeryPituitary surgery removes a tumour of the pituitary gland, usually through the nose using an endoscope, with no cut on the face or head. Some pituitary tumours are treated with medicines first, and the plan is made together with hormone tests and an endocrinologist (hormone specialist).Learn more Neurovascular SurgeryNeurovascular surgery treats problems of the blood vessels in the brain, such as aneurysms, abnormal tangles of vessels and some brain bleeds. Some of these problems are treated by surgery, some through a tube inside the blood vessels, and some only need regular scans.Learn more Neurotrauma SurgeryNeurotrauma surgery is emergency surgery for injuries to the brain and spine, such as after a road accident or a fall. Many head and spine injuries are treated without an operation, but some need urgent surgery to remove a blood clot, relieve pressure or stabilise the spine.Learn more
